Samenvatting

This paper describes the use of road design and electronic technology as an integrated package to solve the complex traffic management issues associated with the operation of a reversible expressway. Interchanges and the innovative use of roundabouts, traffic signals, intelligent transport systems and signs are discussed, in terms of managing traffic both on and at the approaches to the expressway. The paper has been based on the authors' experience with the design and current construction and implementation of the Southern Expressway - Stage 2 in Adelaide, South Australia. The Southern Expressway is one of the world's first one way, reversible roads and provides a significant transport link to the southern regions of metropolitan Adelaide. The paper focuses on three specific aspects of Stage 2 of the Southern Expressway: the process of development and operation of reversible interchanges, and the management of flow reversal; design issues to be considered as part of a reversible expressway; and traffic management issues and solutions for the Expressway as developed.
