Samenvatting

Traffic Management is a term used to describe the activities undertaken by local authorities to improve the safety, efficiency and effectiveness of the road network. Such activities benefit both the providers and users of transport services. This paper presents the effects of a number of traffic calming measures implemented in Gothenburg, Sweden’s second largest city. The impact of calming measures is described in relation to street design, accessibility, safety and security. In addition, the effect of physical changes in the road network on travel patterns is examined. Finally the financial consequences of traffic calming measures are briefly discussed.
