Samenvatting

This booklet illustrates some of the ways in which traffic measures can respect and enhance a historic town's character. It is based on a seminar held by the English Historic Towns Forum in May 1992. The conflicts involved in the urban environment of a historic town are identified. Examples of good practice are then given in the fields of: a) reducing clutter; and (b) respecting and enhancing the environment. Examples describe the use of fewer lamp posts and the removal of redundant ones, the use of alternative signs, and the combination of signs with bollards. Signal control boxes have been sited more carefully and innovative methods used for pedestrian signs. The more sensitive use of surfaces, traffic calming devices and surfaces to assist those with disabilities are described in the second section.
