Samenvatting

Conventional vehicle detectors such as in-pavement loop type systems, and ultrasonic systems, infrared beam systems and imaging systems placed by the side of the road are used to measure traffic conditions. These detectors all had extremely narrow detection ranges, and since each detector is operated independently, it was impossible to detect the traffic conditions of the entire road at one time and it was extremely difficult to evaluate the reliability of measured data. The system developed takes images of the traffic conditions of a road network over a wide area using a CCD camera mounted in a high-altitude flying object, sets the various traffic data from these images, and analyzes and displays them. This system measured actual traffic conditions in Tokyo and traffic data obtained with this system can be used to develop or evaluate algorithms for route guidance, traffic simulation, OD estimations, and disaster monitoring. The paper shows an example of the data being applied to the evaluation of traffic simulations.
