Samenvatting

This paper attempts to review in a very general manner the possible ways of dealing with the traffic problem in towns, a problem made especially . difficult by the very rapid rate of increase in the numbers of motor vehicles in use. This subject was, of course, recently treated by Professor Buchanan, but the present paper approaches the matter in a rather different and perhaps complementary way. Buchanan considered in detail some possible changes in four actual towns, assuming existing types of vehicles, existing methods of traffic control and existing types of junctions. This paper discusses some of the possible changes in these factors and considers the layout of towns in general. It does not consider particular towns. Each method has advantages and disadvantages and to obtain the maximum benefit both methods are required. (Author/publisher)
