Highway marking, signage, and other safety factors provided for roads may not work adequately for all ages of drivers. Drivers aged 65 and over require 4 times the light to see as well as a 39-year old. However, steps can be taken to ensure better traffic safety including the use of special delineator posts as well as 8-in-wide edgelines that reflect more light back to the driver and enhance roadway communication regardless of the driver's age. The visual needs of drivers are discussed, as well as specific elements of visual limitations which give insight into its effects on driving behaviour. Factors that limit drivers' visual abilities also cause them to process information more slowly than normal. The results are given of a survey to determine the subjective evaluation of pavement markings and reflectorised roadside post delineators in enhancing safety and security for older drivers. (A)
