Traffic safety campaign in Japan.

In this paper, the characteristics and effectiveness of traffic safety campaigns in Japan are outlined. The main traffic safety related organisations are listed: National Police Agency; Ministry of Construction; Ministry of Transport. The Management and Coordination Agency, Traffic Safety Measures Office is responsible for the coordination of traffic safety measures in which more than one government agency is involved. A nationwide traffic safety campaign takes place twice a year in April and September for 10 days. The first campaign was held in 1948. The main themes of the spring 1990 campaign were accident prevention for motorcyclists, pedestrians, cyclists and car drivers. The schemes are described and statistics are given on traffic accident fatalities for 1970, 1979 and 1989. The french title of this paper is `Campagne de prévention routière au Japon'. The german title of this paper is `Verkehrssicheitskampagne in Japan'.
