This traffic safety fact sheet contains statistics on motorcyclist involvement in traffic accidents with casualties in the USA in 2002 (including previous years). In 2002, 3,244 motorcyclists were killed and an additional 65,000 were injured in traffic crashes, 1% more than the 3,197 motorcyclist fatalities and 7% more than the 60,000 motorcyclist injuries reported in 2001. More than 120,000 motorcyclists have died in traffic crashes since the enactment of the Highway Safety and National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that helmets saved the lives of 692 motorcyclists in 2002, and that 449 more could have been saved if all motorcyclists had worn helmets.
