Traffic engineers must use much more than the basic information contained in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways (MUTCD), which contains excellent material dedicated principally to descriptions of design requirements for the traffic control devices and the warranting conditions for their use. This chapter provides further information based on experience and practice. It does not pretend to be a substitute for the principles contained in the MUTCD. It does, however, outline basic concerns for the reader and prescribes ideas by recommendation and references to a wealth of information under specific categories of traffic control devices.
