This manual is intended to give advice to traffic authorities and their agents on the correct use of signs and road markings. Mandatory requirements are set out in the current version of the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions; nothing in the manual can override these. The advice is given to assist authorities in the discharge of their duties under section 122 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 and Part 2 of the Traffic Management Act 2004. The manual is applicable in England, Northern Ireland,Scotland and Wales. Regulatory signs indicate requirements, restrictions and prohibitions. The contents include: stop and give way signs; compulsory / prohibited movements; prohibition of traffic; prohibition of waiting /loading; on-street parking / loading; verge or footway parking; clearway / no stopping signs; red routes; pedestrian zones; controlled parking zones; restricted parking zones; speed limits; bus lanes / gates; tram signs; cycle facilities; and lane control signals / signs for tidal flow. The appendices cover the sizes of signs, variation of numerals, the significance of bus stop and bus stand clearway markings, Northern Ireland variations, and an index of diagram numbers.
