he junctions of private roads and exits with public roads account for 7-9% of accidents which occur on stretches between public road intersections, and for this reason such junctions have been subjected to study. There are at present no uniform regulations for these junctions, and factors such as layout, sight conditions, traffic, weather and road conditions all have a bearing on the junction's safety. Although the material used cannot be regarded strictly representative, the conclusions are: (1) the number of accidents at junctions is broadly related to the traffic load at these junctions. A number of small junctions does not therefore, in general, constitute a greater danger than a few larger ones; (2) on roads carrying low traffic flows, such accidents are a negligible risk; (3) rough calculations show that accident frequency is 1 per 1-10 million risk situations at junctions; there are some indications that private road and house exit junctions carry a greater risk than junctions with installations, petrol stations, bus laybys, etc. Junctions are classified by type of public road, and basic data consist of a number of different accident types. A description is given of a mathematical model for accidents at junctions.
