Techniques developed by the Road Traffic Authority Traffic Signals Group, in consultation with other relevant parties, to provide tram priority in co- ordinated traffic signal systems in Melbourne are outlined. SCATS (Sydney Co- ordinated Adaptive Traffic System)is the traffic signal system being implemented in Melbourne under the code name of SCRAM (Signal Co- ordination of Regional Areas in Melbourne).Some of the measures used along the North Balwyn tram route are discussed in detail to illustrate the techniques developed.
