Samenvatting

The significance attached to the development of the trans-European networks was further underlined at the European Summit in Brussels which stressed the prime importance placed upon the role of the networks in relaunching the European economy. The positive Council of Ministers' Decision of 29 October 1993 on the creation of a Trans-European Road Network (TERN) has given fresh impetus and purpose to the work of the Motorway Working Group. This first Decision will be completed by 30 June 1995 by new Decisions which will be taken in accordance with the new legal basis of the Treaty on European Union. With this in mind, the Commission will present new proposals by Spring 1994. lt is therefore paramount that, in order for this review to fully reflect the work of the various Action Groups involved, the efforts of these Groups should be channelled towards drawing up firm a-guidelines with this date in mind and within an overall perspective of integrating the network and its various aspects into a multimodal transport system. This third interim report underlines the encouraging progress already made towards establishing these guidelines.
