Park and ride schemes (transferia) are seen as a good way of replacing a part of the car use by the use of public transport. Transferia can only make an essential contribution to the reduction of the problems of accessibility and environment, when they are located where they will be used. A method to determine the best location for transferia was developed. Application of this method throughout the Netherlands has led to a selection of 150 "principle locations" of which 26 locations were indicated as most promising. These 26 transferia should be completed first, when developing a network of transferia. Furthermore, a calculation model was developed to forecast future transferia use and the consequences of this on the number of car kilometres travelled. This model was based on a transport mode choice on the basis of travel times. By applying the calculation model to the "Rotterdam-North Brabant-west" corridor, it was estimated that a network of transferia can lead to a 11% reduction in the number of car kilometres.
