The transient behaviour of the queue at a fixed cycle traffic light.

The well-known model for a fixed cycle traffic light is studied in detail. Expressions are derived for the distribution of the waiting time and the queue length. Some new quantities are introduced describing the non-stationary behaviour of the traffic light. Mathematical tools from queueing theory are used to solve several problems. Various numerical results are included.
