Samenvatting

The transit community has always considered security to be an integral part of its planning and operations. Nonetheless, after the terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington, DC on September 11, 2001, there was a heightened awareness of the magnitude of the potential impact of stateside threats and attacks, and transit organizations responded in kind with deliberation and determination. This paper presents an overview of the activities conducted by key organizations within the transit community to confront the challenges posed by terrorists and others with intent to cause harm to transit customers, personnel, equipment and facilities.
