Samenvatting

Reducing the gender gap in terms of car use enhances gender equality and it is important that women's gains in equality of mobility are not endangered by measures that constrain their travel compared with men. Thus, for example, policies aimed at improving conditions for motorists should take account of the fact that women's journey patterns are, characteristically, short trips for which the flexibility of the car has clear advantages. Ultimately, the challenge is to provide environmentally sustainable, greener modes of transport which are equally appropriate and convenient for all members of society. The situations for women would certainly be brighter if current good intentions are put into practice, but it is vital that women of all social groups are fully involved in the consultation process.
