Transport of dangerous goods in the five new Federal States of Germany : analysis of the quantity of dangerous goods transported by the various transport modes : rail, road and inland waters shipping.

The Ingenieurgesellschaft Verkehr Berlin GmbH got the order from the Federal Minister of Transport to ascertain the transport volumes carried by the various transport modes, rail, road and inland waters shipping in the new federal states in 1989 in order to: (1) compensate for missing statistics about the transport of dangerous goods; (2) create a basis for the comparison of data between the new and the old federal states; (3) demonstrate the modal split of dangerous goods transport in comparison to the total transport; and (4) find out which traffic junctions are particularly involved in dangerous goods transport. The analysis included the volumes of dangerous goods transport (a) for each transport mode, dangerous material class and route/line, and (b) for domestic traffic, border-crossing traffic (ex- and import) and through traffic. On the basis of the accounting statistic performance for the different transport modes for 1989, the various goods were classified into the relevant dangerous material class according to the valid regulations of the old federal states.
