Samenvatting

A database based on a statistical tool was created to provide sufficiently detailed information on the present flow of goods transportation in Europe. A model was used to provide forecasts in the same detail. Such information systems can support decision makers, media and the general public in the debate on the role of transport, particularly road transport, by allowing various theories to be tried against real problems in a simulated environment. This role is analyzed in a series of stages, comprising the following six topics: (1) the link between the economy and transport; (2) segmentation of the transport of goods by road in Europe; (3) development of road transport flows; (4) long-distance transport of goods by road: a limited potential for combined transport; (5) the true potential of combined transport: the medium distance; and (6) road transport and the environment: a breaking point../ of transport. The present study seeks to analyze the means to be employed to attain these objectives, based on an exact perception of the role of road transport. This role is analyzed in a series of stages, comprising the six topics of the present study.
