This report uses data from the 1978/9 national travel survey to examine the transport policy implications of company-financed motoring. The four main types of company-assisted vehicles were: company-owned and fully subsidised vehicles, company-owned and partly subsidised vehicles, those offsetting costs against income tax and those with mileage-related expenses paid for over 1000 business miles per year. These drivers are compared with drivers from households with at least one person in employment, whose vehicles receive no contribution to motoring costs from companies. The report describes the characteristics of vehicles and drivers with different types of company support and analyses their travel patterns. Estimates are made of the additional mileage and car ownership attributable to company car ownership, and effects on other transport modes; some estimates of the value of a company car to the individual driving it are also made.
