Samenvatting

This chapter compares three regions in the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium with regard to the level of service and accessibility of their transportation systems. The three regions compared were Randstad (in the Netherlands), the Rhine-Ruhr region (Germany) and the Antwerp-Brussels-Ghent region in Belgium. The following factors were investigated and compared among the three regions: mobility levels, empirical traffic volumes, decision-making and planning methods, structure of transportation network and transportation supply, the strategic transportation volume and programs of investment. In addition, key factors that differentiated the groups, such as labour and housing markets and urban structure, were ascertained.
