Samenvatting

The transport sector faces exciting challenges to address users' and public policy requirements. What does «sustainable mobility» mean? How to improve intermodal freight efficiency? How to save energy, reduce the environmental footprint of transport, improve safety? Can we afford the required infrastructure maintenance? What are the most promising technological and organisational answers? Transport Research Arena (TRA) addresses these issues and presents an update of the most advanced research works carried out in Europe and worldwide to better advise policy makers, adjust education and research agendas and foster industrial innovation. Supported by the European Commission, by the Conference of European Road Directors (CEDR) and by three European Technology Platforms: the European Road Transport Research Advisory Council (ERTRAC), the European Rail Research Advisory Council (ERRAC) and the WATERBORNE TP — TRA is the major conference on transport research in Europe. The conference topics cover the mobility of people and goods, with respect to energy, environment, safety and security and economy issues, and all surface transport modes, including cross modal issues. It is a wide forum open to all interested parties and a unique occasion to promote and improve European competitiveness and efficiency in transport and mobility. TRA 2014 is the first major event where the new European Union «Horizon 2020» research and innovation programme will be in-depth discussed. The focus on «Transport Solutions: from Research to Deployment» and the slogan «Innovate Mobility, Mobilise Innovation» intend to bridge the gap between research and the market, at the crossroads of research and implementation. The 5th TRA edition is organised in Paris, France, and hosted by the French Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy and IFSTTAR. TRA2014 at Paris-CNIT is an outstanding place to be with 1,100 submitted abstracts, 600 published and presented papers, 150 posters exhibited in the Outreach Marketplace, and more than 100 sessions. The 3 plenary and 13 strategic sessions highlight the main challenges in transport policies. The 62 scientific and technical sessions deliver research findings and show applications. 44 invited sessions hold debates about projects and case studies. Furthermore, 15 joint conferences and associated events are organised in parallel to offer new perspectives on various topics and increase networking with international stakeholders.
