Samenvatting

The Indian sub-continent is undergoing a phase of rapid urbanisation. Functionally important small and mediurn towns are suffering from serious infrastructural shortages. This paper assesses the status of transport sector in five small and medium towns of varying sizes in agriculturally prosperous and productive district of Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh. With an urbanisation level of 42.20%, the district's 589,000 urban population is distributed in 11 towns. The following five towns were sampled to appreciate the transport supply and demand characteristics: Chilkana Sultanpur, Nanauta, Behat, Rampur Maniharan, and Deoband. The reviews, surveys and discussions conclude that small and medium size play an important role in maintaining the urban rural interface as they reflect a high intercity component in the mobility levels. The intra urban mobility levels justify the need to evolve an eco-friendly transport policy for the revitalisation of transport infrastructure of small and medium towns. (A) The French title of the paper is: "Stratégie de transport pour les petites et moyennes villes en Inde : le cas de Saharanpur".
