Samenvatting

In 1990 the Transport Supplementary Grant to Local Authorities from Central Government was expanded to cover local safety schemes. The Department of Transport have asked the Transport Research Laboratory to monitor the effectiveness of this expenditure. By analysing the programmes put forward by Local Authorities it is hoped to identify those which give the best accident reductions and, conversely, identify schemes which do not give the benefits expected. The study was carried out in two parts: Personal interviews with a sample of 20 Local Authorities; and A postal questionnaire, distributed by the County Surveyors' Society, to be completed by all other Authorities. The study gives a broad picture of the use of TSG funds gives a broad picture of the use of TSG funds for accident reduction in 1992/93 and the anticipated benefits of different treatments. Further studies will look at trends since then, in the light of changes in 1993/94 and 1994/95, and also examine how actual rates of return compare with those predicted. (A)
