Transportation mobility is the modes of movement of individuals from one place to another for purposes of meeting personal, social, employment or recreational needs and desires. Transportation mobility is important to the well being of older adults. Driving is an important component of transportation mobility. Yet, aging and age-related condition places older adults at increased risk of injury and death from automobile accidents. This article examines the age-related physiologic changes and health conditions affecting older adult driving performance. Older adult driving behaviour is also discussed. Guidelines for decreasing risk while maintaining transportation mobility are offered.
