This article explores the author's views on the future of transportation in the 21st century and beyond. Some past attempts at forecasting the future, both in transportation and in other fields, are initially discussed, followed by other more current predictions for the future state of transportation. Next, based on survey results obtained from urban planners, historians, and architects, the author lists his 10 predictions for the future of transportation, affected heavily by expected demographic changes in the population and by the growth of information technology. Briefly described, these are: 1) changes in service package delivery and the resulting impacts on the transportation industry; 2) smart growth and sustainable transportation becoming major quality of life transportation issues; 3) new outer beltways and freeways in intercity corridors; 4) new highway design and construction processes that will produce more durable roadways; 5) privatization of the Interstate Highway System; 6) new revenue sources based more on actual usage; 7) greater integration of transportation modes; 8) use of public transit will increase and transportation will become more personal; 9) highways will be much safer; and 10) automobiles will become more environmentally friendly.
