The integration of transportation planning with other disciplines within the urban expansion planning process has not been a feature of many plans within the Greater Toronto Area. The result has been land use plan which rely on transportation `fixes' and transportation plans which are limited in the scope of the solutions they can achieve. This paper examines three case studies of recent projects undertaken by the authors' firm in the Greater Toronto Area. Each illustrates different aspect of the advantages of integrating the planning disciplines throughout the process as well as some of the barriers encountered along the way. Integration of the planning disciplines is shown to be a benefit to the overall to the overall planning process. In the case studies presented, the process is shown to take somewhat longer than the initial stages of a typical planning process, but with results which are more easily implemented as a result of the consensus that is achieved from all parties.
