Samenvatting
The frequency and severity of closed injuries to the chest as a major cause of death in road accidents is not fully recognized. In particular traumatic rupture of the aorta is a frequent occurrence which, if recognized early, may result in successful surgical correction. The frequency and site of traumatic rupture of the aorta in car occupants, pedestrians and motorcyclists is discussed, as is the effect of wearing seat belts on the frequency of this injury.
