Samenvatting

This paper presents research in which travel diary information has been used to correct origin destination (O-D) survey results and to estimate mode choice models in Valparaiso. It describes the design (discussing the main differences with previous experiences), collection and use of travel diaries as part of a large data collection effort in Valparaiso, the principal port of Chile. The diaries were used initially as an important element of the correction process of the O-D survey which led to the formation of an important data base; the paper discusses the process, its hypotheses and results in some detail. More recently, the diary data has been used together with extra information, to estimate mode choice models that are being used to assess the feasibility of implementing several transport improvement alternatives for the area. The paper discusses the methodology, hypotheses required and main results of the modelling effort.
