This paper describes a practical experiment to influence the modal choices of children travelling to school in a congested urban area of Berkshire. Measured by before and after surveys, scholars' travel is analysed by mode and by route. An awareness compaign, using interactive computer techniques, allowing pupils to explore local and global consequences of different travel choices was prepared, backed up by printed material. Using Geographical Information System (GIS) techniques to plot data, safe routes for pedestrians and cyclists are identified and will subsequently be signed and promoted. Options for public transport enhancements will be assessed and improvements publicised.
