With the downsizing and closing of several transportation libraries, a Transportation Research Board (TRB) study committee was charged with providing strategic advice to the federal government and the states on the core needs for transportation information services and on a sustainable administrative structure and funding mechanism to meet those needs. The recommendations of the committee, which are presented in TRB Special Report 284 and summarized in this article, involve the establishment of transportation knowledge networks regionally and at the federal level to link information providers to users.
