Samenvatting

Many government policies promise reductions in the emission of greenhouse gases and pollution and more efficient use of resources. In Australia, the potential for increased cycling to contribute to these goals is often overlooked. This paper outlines an approach which was recently developed by Arup Transportation Planning in Brisbane, Queensland. It is intended to develop a bikeway network which supports cycling as an alternative transport mode rather than only providing bikeways on an opportunity basis. Drawing upon a number of fundamental transport planning principles and an understanding of the needs of existing and potential commuter cyclists, a simple method for identifying and implementing a suitable network is developed.
