Samenvatting

This study, was about persons older than 50 years of age (N=2693), who were treated for their injuries due to car accidents at the University Hospital at Groningen in the period 1970-1994. The highest prevalence number was found in the age group 50-54 years. Male predominance was observed for patients who were driving the car at the time of the accident, whereas the reverse was found for the passenger. The majority of the injuries occurred at the shoulder and thorax. The percentages of patients who had to stay in the hospital for clinical treatment increased sharply from the age of 70, indicating that the severity of injuries in that age group was greater than in other age groups.
