Samenvatting

This paper discusses trends observed in the organisation of urban and regional public transport in Europe. The role of public transport in the area served and the relationship between transport operators and public authorities are considered. Recent institutional and organisational developments are outlined. The increasing importance of transport in Europe is ascribed to: a) the development of transeuropean links, b) the impacts of the White Book on growth, competitiveness and employment, c) moves towards economic and social cohesion and d) the development of transversal policies including public services. These aspects are discussed with relevant sections of European legislation and conference motions quoted.
