There has been substantial reduction in road fatalities in recent years in New Zealand. However the declining trend is not uniform throughout the country. This paper analyses the trend over time at the national and Police district levels. The paper also compares the declining trend between state highways and other roads, between daytime and nighttime travel, between urban and rural roads and between travel during weekdays and weekends (including holidays). The analysis shows that the difference in declining trends is not statistically significant between state highways and other roads over the last 14 years. However, in more recent years there has been greater decline on state highways. The analysis also suggests that the night-time risk has been reducing faster than during daytime and weekend travel is becoming safer at a higher rate than during weekdays.
