The high temperature and varying precipitation environments of the tropics and similar areas leads to the development of materials with engineering properties significantly different from those of the temperate regions. This paper examines the development and engineering issues associated with the compaction of fine-grained soils in humid regions, difficulties associated with the laboratory assessment of certain tropical soils, road construction on expansive black-cotton soils, contaminant problems in arid regions, and the use of non-standard materials including duricrusts, lateritic gravels, and coral.
