Samenvatting

The possibilities for reducing noise and exhaust emissions from trucks during the next decade are examined. Sources of noise are considered and options for reducing them listed. Standards for exhaust emissions and the ability of current control technology to meet these standards are discussed. Test results from four prototype engines are presented which suggest that 1995/6 emissions targets can be met for both medium duty and heavy duty engines if turbocharged and aftercooled, without aftertreatment systems. The problems of translating such prototypes into volume production are condidered.
