This chapter provides an overview of the transport situation in Turkey. Transport determinants are examined including a) geography, b) population, c) employment, d) education, e) the economy and f) temporal patterns. The transportation system is described including a) the structure of the public transport system, b) car ownership and use, c) the highway infrastructure, d) the rail infrastructure and e) air and sea transport. Travel patterns are considered and statistics provided for a) number of trips, b) trip purpose, c) trip length, d) modal distribution and e) bus fleet sizes for a number of Turkish cities. Turkey's policy making system is described and its particular problems outlined.
