Samenvatting
The importance of providing adequate trackbed support to maximize turnout life is emphasized. A relatively new procedure for construction and rehabilitation of turnout trackbeds is described. The technique involves placing a subballast layer of bituminous (hot-mix asphalt) concrete below the ballast to provide proper support, impermeability, and positive drainage for the track structure. Design practices, installation procedures, 10-year performance evaluations, and economic studies are presented.
