The number of second cars within households are growing fast in the Netherlands. According to a recent study, the growth is not only caused by objective needs such as work or children, but also by more subjective needs like the desire to be independent on each other. This paper is based on a study into the motives of households to own a second car. Interviews with second-car owners were held. Both occupational and cultural aspects were discussed. The results are compared with literature on car sharing outside households. Evidence shows that the lifestyle concept is decisive to second-car ownership and second-car use. (A)
