Samenvatting

There has been a renewed interest in the development of battery driven vehicles as a result of rising petroleum prices and concern for environmental pollution. Since the energy stored in the battery is limited, it is essential that overall system efficiency which includes transmission efficiency, motor efficiency, controller efficiency and battery efficiency be kept as high as possible to maximise range of the vehicle. Conventional solid state choppers, both transistorised and thyristorised versions are highly efficient. However, in recent years use of ripple regulated chopper controllers besides reducing switching or computation losses also gives wider range of speed control. Battery efficiency or source efficiency can be improved by the use of multiple or time-shared choppers. The paper describes two phase ripple regulated two quadrant transistor chopper. The use of the same chopper as battery charger is also illustrated.(a) for the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 267101.
