Samenvatting

It is noted in this plenary paper that the subject of tyre/road noise is an increasing subject area at this conference. It is pointed out that tyre road noise is a longstanding concern, that it is significant at all speeds, that the noise properties of different road surfaces and tyres differ greatly, that tyre road noise is concentrated within one or two octaves, that the effects of speed on noise are complex, that winter tyres are now quieter than summer tyres, that quiet tyres can also be safe tyres, that ultra-low noise pavement surfaces may be more cost-effective than noise barriers, and that the current EU legislation proposed may be ineffective.
