The scarcity of natural and social resources forces the physical planning and transportation planning to answer on the long term the following two questions: (1) what functions of physical planning and transportation planning are crucial for society; and (2) how can these functions be generated, in an effective and efficient way? This paper gives a few answers to these questions, with a range of view to the year 2050. The paper gives an overview of relevant developments in the long term demand for transport. The trends are extrapolated (in an exemplary way) into a policy programme for the whole period. Transportation demand grows too fast for the society to be able to facilitate it all. Secondly, the paper focuses on those aspects of special structure and infrastructure systems that adhere to the process of economic and social innovation. (A)
