Unless planned counter measures are taken, growing motorization and miles travelled in the Federal Republic of Germany will push road traffic to the limits of acceptable environmental pollution. Against this background, the understanding and in part the practice of traffic planning has changed in recent years. However, new insights and approaches have still not been fully exploited. Examples are used to illustrate the reservations which oppose the practical realisation of concepts and projects which are benificial to the environment.
