The reduction of vision distances caused by petrol station illumination was examined in a simulated model situation. Changes in field of view and eye adaptive power were eliminated. Light from company name shield and remainder of light sources were simulated, separately and in combination, with varying intensities and luminances, and distances. It was found that reflective light from raod surface can vary widely depending upon weather conditions, and affect adaptive level and blinding of the eye. Lighting intensity and vision angle determine reduction in view distances, and not luminance and size of light source, A formula is given to evaluate light sources of different strengths.
