Samenvatting

Crucial to formulating and monitoring policies on transport is a broad understanding of the public's attitudes to transport policies and measures, their understanding of traffic's impact on the environment and, perhaps most important of all, the potential to increase awareness of the issues and influence travel behaviour. This article outlines some of the main transport attitude surveys used in DETR. It also briefly discusses some more qualitative research into factors affecting travel choices in rural and urban areas, and refers to the role consultation exercises can play - not least for local authorities during the development of their local transport strategies and plans.
