This report was prepared in accordance with Section 31105 of the 2012 Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century (MAP-21) Act. The report summarizes a series of studies undertaken by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and others, to acquire the information needed to address the general problem of distracted driving. The report documents what is known about distracted driving, including distractions other than the use of personal wireless communications devices; identifies metrics to determine the nature and scope of the distracted driving problem; and discusses methods to enhance education and awareness of the problem to reduce deaths and injuries caused by all forms of distracted driving. It highlights the need for further research and concludes with recommendations to better address the problem of distracted driving. (Author/publisher)
