Samenvatting

The paper considers the factors affecting the performance of UK drivers over the age of 60, summarising the findings of research commissioned by the Automobile Association and three conferences on the subject. Older drivers are more likley to drive shorter distances and on slower roads than their younger counterparts. An assessment is given of how giving up driving is seen to affect driver's lives. Changes in the approach to driving of older drivers compared with that when aged 50 are identified. Older drivers are not always aware of the effects of fatigue, and the problems associated with driving at night. Medical requirements are discussed and there is evidence that the health professional's view of driving needs to change.
