This chapter provides an overview of the transport situation in the United Kingdom. Transport determinants are examined including a) geography, b) population, c) employment, d) education and e) the economy. Aspects of the UK's transportation systems are discussed including a) investment in transport, b) road, rail and air systems, c) public transport demand, d) bus and coach usage, and e) car ownership and use. Travel patterns are considered and statistics provided for a) travel distance by age group, b) travel distance by purpose and c) travel distance to work by socioeconomic group. The UK's policy making system is described, policies outlined and particular features of the UK's situation considered.
