This paper outlines the road safety problem in the United Kingdom, and then illustrates the child traffic education practice being adopted, in particular, from the point of view of local authorities. This practice is through: education at schools on all levels; road environment improvements; enforcement; and through various publicity campaigns at both national and local level. The paper touches on the purpose and effect of road safety education in schools: not only with regard to education on how to use roads properly, but also to understand how other road users can abuse the system and put children in danger. Also included are some examples of the various publicity campaigns being run nationally with the support of local authorities, and other campaigns of a more local nature. The role of other agencies is recognised and explained, and some examples are given on joint campaigning. The results of recent research on the `Road Safety Education in Schools -Good Practice Guidelines' are also included. Some other current and future road safety developments are highlighted and explained. (A)
